So I turned 41 a couple of days ago and decided that for the next year I am going to:

    (a) Exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes for five days a week minimum
    (b) Lose 25kg by my 42nd Birthday (which equates to 480gm per week)

I am currently weight 94.7kg and my goal is 70kg. I'm 168cm tall so doable... I discovered this website a few days ago and have read through it and it is common sense...energy in = energy out. Not exactly rocket science and no limitations on what you eat.

I suffer from Crohn's and have just had a flare up of Ulcerative Colitis and am on the final drug availabel to get into remission...so far so so...it is not a matter of if but a matter of when I will need surgery. So I am trying to get around the consequences of that in my head at the moment. Being 41, single and possibly have my entire bowel removed...mmmmm

    So here goes...no more excuses.

Look forward to seeing how others are progressing and picking up some tips etc.

30 minutes a day, good stuff, although it's a lot easier to cut this into three 10 minute power sessions, ie: the sweatier you can get, the better, get that heart rate up! Go as hard as you can!

Just make sure you exercise at least ONCE every day, even for the ten minutes.
Anybody can find ten minutes a day to do some form of exercise.

Mix up aerobic with resistance, eg: skipping and free weights, skipping ropes are $10 and you can use anything for weights, soup can etc. Walking is free, but walk as fast as you can!

Don't weigh yourself every day, once a week is fine, and keep track on a calendar or something. Keeping a food diary for the first few weeks is a good idea, if you don't lose any weight you can figure out what the problem may be foodwise.

Food isn't much of a problem, if you prepare it yourself, ie: you know what you are putting in, just watch your quantities.

We got the way we are by eating the amount we do, so the first step is portion control.

You don't need Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers to teach you portion control and what is/is not healthy, common sense and the internet can solve all of your problems.

Drink plenty of water, eat fruits and vegetables every day, have a couple of meat free days each week.

When you do eat meat, DON'T FRY IT, frying is only nice when you add oil/butter... so you're better off grilling meat.

Gravy, mayo etc... you're better off not having anything to do with these.

Healthy food can be delicious, if it is prepared correctly.

    All the best!

    Hi Captain
Thanks for the great advice. I have been really sick with Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's on and off so my routine has been pretty sparodic, but I have decided regardless I will just do it.

I knock out a 7.5km route in 1 hour 10 minute so am getting back into that. If I go out for a walk it's got to be at least an hour as I love walking. When I hit the pool I aim to do 1km minimum as it only takes 20 minutes give or take. And I enjoy surfing, and am looking into boxing and when I get well again I will be getting back into the Olympic Weightlifting a couple of days a week, so with all that variety surely I will make some headway. I also have purchased a X Trainer off Trade me for $40 - BARGAIN and it works! I have some weights, copies of Zumba and a swiss ball...you would think that I would be sleek and hot!!! Hahahahaha...no but I will be!

The weight gain has been a combination of overeating and drugs. Mostly over eating... I get frustrated when I hear other obese people use 100 excuses as to why they are overweight. I am overweight and the plain and simple truth is you get over weight from eating too much...to much energy is going in and not enough is going out. Everything else is an excuse... Do I sound too hard nosed?

Also I joined FitDay.com which is fantastic for me. I am tracking everything. I intend on doing this until I have reached goal and maintained for at least 3 months. By that stage I will have embedded all the good, healthy habits to keep me going.

You are right on your comment about Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers. Portion contol is easily managed with smaller dinner plates, measuring and weighing until you get it.

I got so sick 3 weeks ago and am potentially looking at having my bowel removed so the key is getting healthy as so that if I do have to have surgery I am just down for the short term.

Look forward to amy advice you have along the way. Watch this space - it is going to decrease!

    Cheers

A vegetarian eating plan might be best for you then if you are having a bowel problem. Although your doctor has probably mentioned cutting back on red meat.

    Look forward to your progress.

im sure it wouldn't need to be entirely vegetarian, but having a high vegetable ratio wouldn't hurt at all
