    Hi Everybody.

I hope everybodies Christmas was a merry and safe one. Its all over now, the food has been eaten and the Wine has been drunk. Now has come the time to "Pay" for all those little misdemeanors. LOL

About 18 months ago now I weighed just over 110KG and started cycling after my doc gave me some bad new regarding LIFE Expectancy of somebody in my weight and fitness range. It gave me a wakeup call. I started exercising and eating more sensibly.
At first it worked really well, I lost an average of 1 to 2 KG a month at a steady pace. Not a huge amount I am willing to admit but it was steady and I was feeling very happy with myself, best of all it was something that I could maintain indefinitely as the only changes that were made to my lifestyle were changes that I actually enjoy doing.

Then, about 6 months ago now, I also quit smoking. I chose the Champix method and it really worked. Except that ever now and then I got cravings and I forgave myself for eating my way through them. All seemed well for a month or 2 except that I had stopped loosing weight which I could live with considering the extra food consumed. Then if you remember late winter early spring was Wet and windy and not particularly nice weather wise and in about 6 weeks about 6 KG suddenly re-appeared.

Now I am really struggling to restart the loss. No matter what I do I seem to be unable to restart the losses. It is like my metabolism has taken a dive and is determined to convert everything into fat.

I am not sure where to start.

    Somebody?

Just wondering, are you logging what you eat?
I'm currently unable to exercise so im eating 6 small meals a day to keep the metabolism going, and also nixing all processed foods. Its a bit hard at times, but usually great. My skin has cleared up and my knees are almost allowing me to exercise mildly now (horay!).

Smoking does tend to speed up your metabolism, as does coffee etc. Try having a coffee when you get smoking cravings? (instant has less calories!).

    Hi Liz.
Sorry it has taken this long (holidays and all that).
No, I had really hoped not to have to go down that track because to be honest it just seems way over the top and I hate anything that remotely resembles paperwork hehehehe.
I thought that I could just exercise the extra weight off but it seems that I have leveled out.
I have done a bit of research over the last few days and have decided on two things.
1: I have bought a nice set of runners to add 3 1/2 to 3/4 hour running sessions to my 4, 1 hour bicycle rides.
2: As of Monday I am going to cut sugar out of my diet and anything with sugar in it. So no more jam on my toast or sugar in my coffee or weatbix. I read somewhere that the body metabolises sugar before fat and therefor the fat normally gets stored. Not sure if its right but I like the theory.
I'll let you know how I get on.
ps: hope you get better soon.

By default yep your body does process sugars before fats. By sugars they mean carbs, and that can be anything thats not protein or fat really. So you can also probably lower breads, pasta, or flour based things and it gives you a good result also.

When you do a low carb diet, or atkins style thing, your body goes into ketosis. which effectively reverses it so your body runs on burning fat. It means it always burns fat first. It also has a side affects of lowering your appetite, so its a whole lot easier to eat less.
This is great for people like me who crave things or find they are hungry after just finishing dinner (from the insulin hit), or diabetics etc. Only bad thing about this is remembering to take dark leafy greens & nuts/seeds to get your magnesium (or take pills ).

My knees are slowly better, i'm finally able to do *some* exercise, but only cycling and only slowish or low gears. I've been out most days doing a flat 6km with the kids to the shops and back. Diet is working well though, im 8kg down since last month. Heading out on holiday tomorrow for a week in CHCH, but im happy with sticking to eating right whilst away
